When one mouse click takes about 60 seconds to process data backup is a VERY LONG process. It took me the better part of a day to back up what I need to. Fast forward to the next day, hanging out at the Genius Bar. (They really should serve drinks.) My personal Genius was running diagnostics, and every time he "repaired" something the machine got slower and slower. A reinstall of the OS was in order. That shouldn't lose anything he assured me. This was either a hard drive failure (gasp, no!) or a corrupt software glitch.
OS reinstalled and the darn thing won't even bring up my background image. The dreaded color wheel of death just kept spinning! One thing left to do - wipe it and start from scratch. If it's a software problem that will solve it. If it's a hard drive problem I'm screwed.
"Are you ready to do this?" my Genius asked? "Have you backed up your data?"
Now, no one can answer that without a little hesitation, but I was confident. "Do it!"
What we spent an hour and a half trying to fix took about 2 minutes to erase. Reinstall OS and it was fast as lightning once again. Not a hard drive problem thank goodness. Now the nerve racking part - to reinstall everything else.
Long story short - because of the backups I was able to reinstall my programs and add all my data back in within 12 hours. It was my first crash, my first reinstall of backed up data, and about as painless as you could hope for. The next thing to do (after writing this post) is to back it all up again!
