The Dossier: Process & Costs
Step 1: Retainer
Cost = $120
This cost is a retainer for 3 hours of research (required up front.)
The retainer allows me to get an understanding of how much of your family history is accessible. If I find nothing or max out what’s available in 3 hours, you will receive a pedigree report of the findings I was able to document in that time as well as recommendations on how you might want to proceed with research.
Step 2: Research
Cost = up to $480*
Charge for an additional 12 hours of research (15 hours in total) will be conducted.
Within this time frame I usually find 4 generations of data for the home person – that would be 5 generations in all. If it takes less than 12 hours, you will only pay for the hours spent in research at my rate of $40/hour. You can always choose to add more research time if desired.
Step 3: Compilation
Cost = $480
Cost for writing, compiling and printing the (1) Pedigree Report, (2) Ancestor Report (3) family photos and (4) historical document reproduction.
The Ancestor Report is a more in depth version of the pedigree. It provides a view of your ancestors within the context of history. For each person in your direct line I will write a personal history (1-2 paragraphs) based on evidence uncovered in the research phase. A photo of a what a typical Ancestor Report page looks like can be found on the Images page.
Step 4: Binding
Cost = $40
Print List of Sources, hand bind work into Dossier format and prepare soft copy of materials.
$1,000 for complete Dossier, retainer fee not included.
Additional copies of the Dossier = $199 each
*This number is completely dependent on what I find. If your family, for whatever reason, is difficult to trace through online records, then the cost, and the information gained, will be much lighter. I am usually able to trace families back 4 or 5 generations. If you want to cap the cost at a certain number of hours of research, or a certain number of generations, I’m happy to do that too.
